Responsibilities

Patient Care Assistant PCA II Responsibilities:
  • Greet and register patients courteously—face‑to‑face and by phone—while consistently safeguarding patient privacy (e.g. securing PHI and locking systems before stepping away).
  • Support patient flow during admission, exam room placement, transitions, and discharge; respond promptly to call lights and escort patients as directed.
  • Monitor and document clinical metrics: vital signs, weight, blood glucose, intake/output, and other routine measurements; escalate changes to the RN/provider as needed.
  • Perform specimen collection and transport—including clean‑catch urine, throat/nasopharyngeal swabs, and blood draws if trained, handle specimens, labeling, logging, and transport according to lab safety guidelines.
  • Assist with EKG and cardiac monitoring setup, and support emergency response preparedness (CPR, resuscitation equipment, sitter/watch duties) within the scope of BLS training and facility policy.
  • Provide bedside and mobility support—assist patients with hygiene, feeding, toileting, repositioning, safe ambulation, and basic wound‑care assistance.
  • Maintain treatment area safety and readiness—clean instruments and operators, restock supplies, organize units and charts, check room refrigerators, update logs, and dispose of waste properly.
  • Answer phones and assist with unit coordination as receptionist backup—relay messages, manage simple inquiries, and support staff communication.
  • Engage in quality assurance and team initiatives—attend staff meetings and trainings, support QA activities, update competencies, and contribute to interdepartmental collaboration while adhering to state and COLA laboratory accreditation standards.

Skills & Qualifications

Patient Care Assistant PCA II Skills & Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent 
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification—upon hire or obtained within 14 days of start date.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills—clear and respectful when interacting with patients and team members
  • Proficiency with daily documentation, electronic health records, MS Word, Excel, and basic hospital computer systems
  • Excellent organizational skills—able to multitask, prioritize, and follow detailed instructions
  • Up-to-date knowledge of safety protocols and infection‑control best practices
Preferred (but not required):
  • 2 years of experience in healthcare or a related field
  • Exposure to procedural environments or clinical settings
Physical Demands:
The physical demands below are typical of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position with or without a reasonable accommodation:  
  • Frequently: stand, walk, use hands, reach, bend/stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Occasionally (up to ~25 lbs): lift, push, or move patients and supplies
  • Regular use of speech (e.g. answering call lights) and hearing (e.g. alarms, verbal instructions)
